What are the passport requirements?

All participants must hold a passport that is valid for no less than six months beyond the intended stay. It should contain two facing blank pages for any visa to be affixed to.

Exact passport requirements vary depending on the country you are visiting and your nationality. If you hold a passport from outside the EU please contact the team at lusu.overseas@lancaster.ac.uk; so they can investigate the requirements on your behalf.

If your passport expires before the trip, make sure you apply for a new one as soon as possible so that you have it back in time to apply for your visa.

How do I get a visa?

Exact visa requirements vary depending on the country you are visiting and your nationality. If you are travelling to China, Ghana or India you will need to obtain a visa; most nationalities do not need a visa to visit Malaysia. If you are travelling to the United States, you will need to either obtain an ESTA or a visa depending on your personal circumstances.

We will assist with the visa process by giving you an invitation letter from the appropriate authorities in the country you are visiting. Do not apply for your visa until advised to do so, which will be in the Summer Term for trips departing in August or September.

If you are not a UK citizen please ensure you indicate this on your application form so that we can investigate your visa requirements. Contact the team if you have more questions about the visa application process on 01524 592714.

Please note: When applying for a visa, if you have only one valid passport (which is most commonly the case) you will be without your passport for a period of time while your application is being processed. Please consider any other trips you have planned abroad in relation to the time that you will be without your passport.

How long will I be without my passport?

When applying for a visa, if you have only one valid passport (which is most commonly the case) you will be without your passport for a period of up to 2 weeks under normal circumstances while your visa application is being processed. Please note, this period may be considerably longer if your application is more complicated. Please consider any other trips you have planned abroad in relation to the time that you will be without your passport. If this is a problem for you please contact the team who will do their best to work around your other commitments.
